Bloggers: I Love You Guys.

Most people, myself included, don’t put much thought into websites. We visit hundreds of blogs every week set up by our peers, and we enter new blog posts into our own precious. Blogs have lost their awe.

Until you have to create a new one.

Yesterday I told hubster, “I need to set up a new site.” I want a site in addition to the blog. We already own the domain name and have hosting, so no probs, right? Wrong. While my blog has only been up since June 2010, I feel like its been here forever and I’d forgotten the hours and days of time that went into creating a personal representation. Every line, literally every line was put there by us. It’s the exact shade and thickness we programmed. (I keep saying we because I watched and made requests).

Then, last night I activated the new domain, chose the template from thousands of Worpress possibilities, and it didn’t work. So I tried a few more and realized that I want what I want and I’m going to have to make it what I want. This means starting from scratch and that means time.

I think I’ll need to stop sleeping to fit this additional task into my life. But, life goes on whether I get to do all the things I want to do or not, and I don’t like to miss anything. So, I will sleep when I’m dead or too sick to want to do anything. For now, I will march on. I have much to do!

To all my fellow bloggers, I love you. I appreciate you, and you are doing an amazing job out there! You make it look so easy that we readers don’t even think of all the time, love , sweat and tears that went into making it so fabulous.

  • Julie, have you tried the “Weaver” theme on WordPress? It does just about anything you can think up and gives you all the control — without having to do the html work. I can’t recommend it enough. All the power, a fraction of the work. It’s the only theme I’ve come across that lets you tweak everything.

  • Thanks R.L! I’m going to check that out right now!! Yeye!!

  • I can see the need to start more than one blog/website. I decided to start another blog last week with a more political pop culture theme (just because I’ve found myself wanting to be able to write about current events) – and since I don’t want to offend any of my readers or turn my blog about writing into a mish-mash of writing / political stuff – I figured a new blog was the way to go. But you are right about it taking forever to set up… and I’m going to check out this Weaver theme too (I’m using wordpress instead of blogger and it’s got some major differences).

  • Austin! Oh you are right on. Once there’s a following, you don’t want to mess it up LOL. So, new focus means another site. OOF. I’m using the Atahualpa WordPress theme. Believe it or not that’s what this site is using. I’m comfortable enough with it to make the next one with the same. I literally customize everything. Every line’s shade, thickness, placement, opacity. I’m crazy, but hey. I have a vision LOL. Good luck with your new site!! We’ll have to compare outcomes later ;) I love looking at websites <–nerdy. I know.

  • One of my wish-I-may, wish-I-might wishes is to develop graphic design skills over night. I admire your devotion to both writing and design. (Sleep is overrated anyway, right? ;) )
